Yarn: Two colours of double knit yarn (acrylic is good) Stem – Using two strands of yarn held together cast on 15 sts. Divide sts between the needles and join to begin working in the round, being careful not to twist. Work in stocking stitch until piece measures 15cm / 6in. Cast off all sts Hood – Using two strands of yarn held together cast on 36 sts. Round 1: P all sts. Rounds 2 – 4: K all sts. Round 5: (K10, K2tog) x 3. 33 sts Rounds 6 – 7: K all sts. Round 8: (K 9, K2tog) x 3. 30 sts Rounds 9 – 10: K all sts. Round 11: (K 8, K2tog) x 3. 27 sts Rounds 12 – 13: K all sts. Round 14: (K 7, K2tog) x 3. 24 sts Rounds 15 – 16: K all sts. Round 17: (K 6, K2tog) x 3. 21 sts Round 18: K all sts. Round 19: (K 5, K2tog) x 3. 18 sts Round 20: K all sts. Round 21: (K 1, K2tog) x 6. 12 sts Round 22: K2tog x 6. 6sts. Round 23: K2tog x 3. Break yarns, leaving a long tail. Draw tail through all sts. Pull tight. Finishing – Pull yarn tail at top of hood to inside and sew several stitches to secure. Use tail to sew the hood onto the stem. Slide a stick inside the stem. TULIP Materials Two strands are held together for the stem, and four strands for the leaves and petals. For the leaves and petals, use needles that will yield a very firm, tight fabric. For the i-cord stem, you will need two double point needles in a size smaller than those used for the petals and leaves. It is not important for the fabric of the stem to be stiff as a stick will be inserted into it Wooden stick approx 30cm long, thin enough to fit inside stem. Pattern: Stem Using double pointed needles and two strands of yarn held together cast on 5 sts. Work I-cord as follows: Knit 1 row. Instead of turning the work around to work back on the WS, slide all stitches to the other end of the needle, switch the needle back to your left hand, bring the yarn around the back of the work, and start knitting the stitches again. After the first 2 stitches, give the yarn a sharp tug. Repeat this row to form the I-Cord. After a few rows, the work will begin to form a tube. Continue until work measures approx 25.5 cm or 10inches or desired length. Cast off. Insert stick into hollow stem, and sew one end closed. Leaves (make 2) Using larger needles and four strands of yarn held together cast on 4 stitches. Rows 1 – 8: Work in stocking stitch, ending with a wrong side row. Row 9: [rs]: {Kfb, K1] twice (6sts) Rows 10 - 32: Work in stocking stitch Row 33: [RS]: K1, SSK, K2tog, K1. (4sts) Row 34: [WS]: P4 Row 35: [RS] : SSK,K2tog. (2 sts) Row 36: [WS] : P2 Row 37: K2tog. Break yarns and draw through last stitch. PETALS (make 4) Using larger needles and four strands of yarn held together cast on 3 stitches. Row 1 [RS]: K1, Kfb, K1 (4sts) Row 2 [WS]: P4 Row 3 [RS]: [Kfb, K1] twice (6 sts) Rows 4 – 12: Work in stocking stitch Row 13 [RS]: K3, K2tog, K1 Row 14 [WS]: P5 Row 15 [RS]: K1, K2tog, K2tog. (3sts) Row 16 [WS]: P3 Row 17 [RS]: K1, K2tog. Row 18 [WS]: SPP. Break yarns and draw through last stitch. FINISHING Weave in ends. Sew petals together, overlapping petal bases to form tulip shape and leaving a hole in the centre to insert stem. Insert top (closed end) of stem and sew securely to tulip. Sew leaves to base of stem. Give your new tulip variety a special name.
